How I ever found Bikram Yoga, I have no idea. My first class was a total disaster. Why I went back the next day, I'm not sure, but that's when the magic happened. Georgia gave the class, and the 90 minutes of dreadful sweat became my favorite 90 minutes of the day (with a little help from the 'Yoga Angels on the ceiling'). Several months later, my weight went from 280 to 215 and I was feeling great and with a sense of peace. I remember talking to an instructor after a class and apologizing for possibly distracting the people around me as I kept falling out of the posture. His reply was "Honey, they don't even know you're in the room". The first of many Bikram lessons: (1) is that you are either called by your first name or by "Honey" in a Bikram class; (2) I learned about focused meditation.
Just about the time I discovered Bikram Yoga, I was reading and embracing the writings of Eckhart Tolle "Power of Now" and Ram Dass "Still Here". The three of these combined to dramatically reshape my attitude, my awareness to life by helping me to stay in the present moment as well as rejoicing in the me yet to come. Once I start dreading an upcoming posture, or start thinking about what I have to do after the practice, I lose it, big time. As Eune, the owner of Bikram Studio in Palisades Park says: "Thinking is a bad neighborhood, stay away from it". It doesn't come easy, and sometimes it doesn't last long, but those moments of stillness are priceless.
My practice starts with being mindful and grateful that I am able(physically and mentally) to come and take a class. The posture sequence is designed to cut blood off to various parts and then allow the blood to rush back. How cool is that? I can't think of any other workout, where I can stay in one place spot for 90 minutes and systematically work my body inside and out, right down to the cell level. Staying in one spot to purposely have a "mini heart attack now to prevent a major heart attack later"!
Each day, the practice is different for me. Some days, I feel strong and the flexibility poses are a challenge, other days, I'm somewhat flexible and the endurance postures are the killers. I have learned to "enjoy the journey": appreciate the entry, the posture and the exit; without any anticipation. Who had ever thought this former type-A lunatic could enjoy millimeter corrections while 'holding' a posture for 60 seconds?
I am now in the 'afternoon' of my life (to quote Wayne Dyer); my priorities and approach to life have drastically changed. As Eune sometimes suggests, the full posture may have wait for our next life. I now have the patience and a better behaved ego that lets me do the best I can for that day and come away at peace. Bikram yoga is part of my practice that helps me return to the spiritual stillness that I had lost. An exit sign at a Bikram studio pulls it altogether: "Don't let anything steal your peace." Thank you, Mr. Bikram! |

Yoga for Stress
More than 50 years ago, my guru, Bishnu Ghosh, said that "mental stress and strain is the cause of all deseases, even infectious ones." Why? Because stress compromises the immune system, your own Department of Defence. Recently, Western medicine has begun to catch up with my guru's wisdom, confirming amont other things, the destructive role of cortisol, a stress hormone, in chronic illness. (Cortisol also contributes to obesity.) Diabetes, obesity, hypertension, depression, migraines, and chronic pain, just to name a few of the most serious ailments, have all been linked to stress, along with lifestyle habits such as a poor diet.
What is stress? Medical schools will tell you it's "the nonspecific response of the body to any demand, external or internal." Acute stressors are short-term things, like deadlines for taxes, or a big business meeting. Chronic ones include taking care of a terminally ill family member and having a high-pressure job.
With either kind of stress, the body is sent into emergency overdrive, the "fight-or-flight response," and our bodies release chemicals such as adrenaline and cortisol to help us cope or respond to the stressor. An adrenaline rush, for example, can help us run away faster from danger. The fight-or-flight response also raises the heart and breathing rates, and directs blood away from normal functions such as digestion so it can be used for emergency responses.)
Over time and with repeated emergencies - or at least events and conditions that we perceive as stressful - the body becomes overwhelmed by the constant release of these hormones and their acidic, corrosive errects. We're exhausted, and the immune system, endocrine system and nervous system cannot funtion at their best, which causes high blood pressure, sleep disorders, chronic headaches, neck tension, backaches, depression and anxiety.
With the natural science of yoga we tap into the body's intrinsic healing system, calming and reintegrating the mind, body and emotions. Through the posures and the breath work in Hatha Yoga, we take back control and turn off the fight-or-flight response and its flood of bad biochemistry. Here's just a little of the recent clinical confirmation of this by Western scientists, proof of how well Hatha Yoga returns the body to equilibrium.
In 2005, a German study compared groups of women who were acutely distressed over a three-month period. Those who practiced yoga showed siginificantly lower levels of cortisol compared to those in the control group, and made siginificant decreases in their levels of perceived stress, anxiety, fatigue and depression. They reported higher levels of well-being and they improved physically as well; women suffering from headaches or back pain experienced marked relief. Countless other studies have shown yoga's effectiveness in stress management. You don't need an anti-anxiety drug with potentially gruesome side effects. Instead, get up off that couch and heal yourself by practicing Hatha Yoga.
