Dear BYP Members,
Fall is here. Time to enjoy the beautiful colors of the changing foliage and start thinking about upcoming holidays. As a Bikram yogi, no need to sweat over sneaking a piece of Halloween candy or a slice of pumpkin pie. And now, with our new "Refer A Friend" program, you have an extra incentive to introduce your family and friends to Bikram Yoga so they too can be ready to celebrate the holidays, completely guilt free.
This Autumn, make sure you find the time to get outside for a hike or walk in the woods, then come back inside for a good sweat with your Bikram Yoga buddies!!
Come practice pure Bikram Yoga, with nothing added to, or subtracted from, the 90 minute class! Feel good, look good and live well!

Testimonial from a BYP family member
Michelle Blank
On October 9th I will be 55 and I can honestly say that I have never felt more vital, fit, energized, balanced and centered. The funny thing about feeling like this is that I realized, in my mid twenties, that staying mentally and physically young was going to require a lifelong commitment. So I began working out. I did weight training (that I loved) and cardio (that I hated) pretty consistently for almost 30 years...until I discovered Bikram Yoga!
The fact of the matter is, even with my exercise routine, by the age of 52 the years were taking their toll. I felt as if I had turned into the Tin (Wo)Man from the Wizard of Oz despite, or maybe even as a result of, my workout regime. I could not believe how rigid my body had become and how many aches and pains I had. Something was always causing me problems. It could be my knees, my ankles, my shoulders, my neck, my back, my hips, even my hands. Range of motion was a joke. My flat stomach disappeared, replaced by a menopause "pot." YUCH!!!!!!
My friends who are near and dear to me know that I am not the type to give up on anything that I think is important, and staying fit and young at heart is an endeavor I had and have no intention of abandoning. SO WHAT if the path I chose to follow for 30 years didn't bring me to where I set out to go? It's never too late to make a course correction in your life. And that's exactly what I did in January 2008 when I walked into Bikram Yoga @ the Palisades.
A friend of mine was visiting from Israel. I made poor Adit come with me to my first class. There I was in the back of the room, wearing loose pants (no way Eune could see that my legs were shaking, let alone check for locked knees!!) and a big, long top (to hide my stomach). I couldn't breathe; I couldn't touch my toes; forget about bending back; no way could I balance on one foot; and fixed firm pose - you must be kidding! I sweated and suffered but came back the next day... and have been practicing 4-5 days a week for the past 21 months.
Today I am a transformed woman. I cannot imagine my life without Bikram Yoga. It's effortless for me to come to the studio -- it's something I want to do; something I miss when I cannot get to class. Simply put, Bikram Yoga has done for my mind, body and soul what 30 years of working out at the gym could not. My spirit is rejuvenated. My heart is open (and apparently as strong as a runners - so the doctor tells me). I am fit and full of energy. And I think I look OK in my skimpy yoga shorts and top. :)
Eune, Sean - Thank you soooo much for welcoming me into your Bikram family. I love practicing at the studio. I missed you this past week while I was hiking in the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec, Canada with Adit (who I had not seen since her last visit 21 months ago). She hardly recognized me and no one we met on our adventure believed that I was 55 years old! |

Posture #7 Balancing Stick Pose
Tuladandasana
This posture is all about locking the body into one solid line. To do that, imagine a tug of war: Someone is pulling your back foot toward the wall with all his might and someone else is pulling your outstretched hands as hard as she can in the opposite direction, toward the mirror in front of you. Again, this puts you into natural human traction, stretching the spine from coccyx to neck.
The forward tilt of your torso sends high-speed blood pouring into the heart, especially the neglected lower region, cleaning out the veins and all the arteries, strengthening the heart muscle. The same rejuvenating flood rushes into the brain as well. It is also one of the best exercises for bad posture. And by perfecting body control and balance it strengthens your powers of concentration.
