WHY DID I BECOME A BIKRAM YOGA INSTRUCTOR?

I never dreamed I would be where I am today, teaching yoga. In fact, I don't think when any little girl is asked what they want to be when they grow up, the answer is a Bikram yoga instructor. I am usually shy, and never the "life of the party" so to speak.  In high school I was voted "talks least, says most" in our senior poll.  Public speaking and speech making were most dreadful for me, but I sacrificed my reservations for the sake of the yoga.  After experiencing the wonders of yoga first hand, I knew I had to share it.  Without a doubt, that was the best decision I have made.  Teaching gives me a brand new perspective and even though I am now the teacher, the students teach me every day about compassion and I never stop learning.

I can't say there is just one reason why I became a Bikram instructor.  The reasons are endless, and always changing just like the practice itself.  My very first Bikram experience was five years ago, and since then, not only has my practice improved but I truly believe I have become a better person.  I decided to give it a try because I suffer from scoliosis which caused extreme uneven shoulders and lower back pain.  I also have a very weak immune system which led to lots of sickness such as strep throat which consequently means antibiotics and medication.   Practicing Bikram regularly has helped me immensely, I consider it the best medication for any type of relief; physical, biochemical, or psychological.  My shoulders have significantly evened out, and I don't remember that last time I have been sick.
Bikram yoga requires dedication, discipline, and strength, not only physical but mental.  These demands eventually made its way out of the yoga room into my daily life and I am forever grateful.  My priorities have changed and I have learned to appreciate simple things, like a nice breeze or a sip of water.  I did not expect to receive so many various types of benefits from a yoga that involves the same 26 postures.  Teaching yoga helps with my practice just as much as practicing helps with my teaching.  Practicing Bikram yoga seems to be the perfect complement to just about everything.  I know that this is forever, and I am excited to see what else unfolds.

Challenge
Congratulations! 60 Classes in 60 Days
Fany Garcia

AwkwadA few months ago I had to end my two years' relationship since the person I had trusted was not the one I believed in.  My heart was broken and I was so afraid of stop loving other people.  For days and nights, I tried to find out what would be the best way not to lose myself and stay healthy and calm. I decided to start 30 days Bikram Yoga challenge.
It was not easy physically and mentally.  I tried my very best to stay focused, not to miss out even a word from teachers, and to do each and every posture with my 100% effort.  After each class, I found out myself getting calmer and feeling better.  Physically, it was A Challenge; my tight hamstrings almost scared me away from the practice.  Instead of stopping, I made up my mind to continue to 60 days.

I would like to thank every one of you who took class with me for the last 60 days. Your energy in the class, your encouragement in the locker room, and your smile supported me to complete the challenge.  I am very grateful for everything I have gone through.  I feel better than ever, and so sure I look better than ever.

Posture #5
Standing Head To Knee Pose
Dandayamana Janushrasana

When you fall out of this posture at any point - and you will - you must start all over again, at the very first part. Why? As with all the postures, learning Standing Head to Knee is a process. That's what's important, not the outcome. Remember: The posture is never the object when practicing yoga - the body is the object. We move forwad step-by-step, building the complete and correct form slowly and sequentially, brick by brick. This posture is a diagnostic tool that shows your levels of focus and determination, both to your teacher and to you.  Just as Half Moon tells me immediately how strong, flexible and balanced you are, standing head to knee instantly reveals how much concentration power you have developed. Feed your own Bengal tiger and your own inner bulldog!

AwkwadWhen you learn to lock the knee properly, this posture improves the flexibility of the sciatic nerves and strengthens the hamstrings and leg muscles. Plus it works the muscles of the back, the biceps and the tricpes. When you touch your forehead to your knee, you create front side compression, so you are also squeezing and flushing out the internal abdominal organs, such as the gall bladder, pancreas and spleen, as well as the uterus and ovaries.
