AwkwadI want to be the Last Bikram Yoga Practitioner Standing!

I have to be. Bikram Yoga is what stands between me as an active adult and me as a cripple. I am 62 years old, and I must remain active so I can enjoy my beautiful family.

I have rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune form of the disease. It is degenerative, debilitating, and depressing. I am in chronic pain. I was a runner and a tennis player. I had to give up both. I was a speed walker, and a weight lifter. I had to give up both.  I was desperate for an outdoor physical activity, so I took up golf. Two years ago, I was able to play eighteen holes several times a week and could practice everyday in between. Now I play nine holes, and only once a week. Every joint and tendon in my body is either damaged or compromised. I have had ten hand surgeries: two for carpal tunnel syndrome and eight to relieve trigger fingers. My surgeon jokes that I should "Look on the bright side, you only have two more fingers to go."

I do look on the bright side, because I have found Bikram Yoga. I have been practicing yoga, though not religiously, for years. In Connecticut, I found classes in Baron Baptiste yoga. It is Vinyasa style yoga in a heated room (only 95 degrees). From the beginning, the flow was much too fast, and I had to practice at the 50% level to reduce my risk of injury. However I loved the heated room, and I began searching for any hot yoga I could find in New Jersey. Bikram Yoga popped up in my search. I had never heard of it, so I tried a class. Then I tried another. I have been coming to Bikram Yoga at the Palisades for nearly a year.

What a difference from my previous experiences in heated studios! In the first class, I was certain I would die. I kept checking the clock, praying the class would end. I was sore and exhausted, but I wasn't injured. The discipline of taking each position correctly and holding it, greatly reduces the chances for injury, and instinctively is a much better and safer way for me to practice. I took my first class on September 19, 2008. I plan to be the oldest Bikram practitioner in history! I plan to be the last one standing!
Science
Posture #6
Standing Bow Pulling Pose
Dandayamana Dhanurasana

standing bow pullingDon't dive forward into this position too fast.  Everyone wants to look beautiful in the finished pose, so they rush to get into it.  Take the time to get yourself firmly grounded and set on your standing leg before you bring your body forward and down.  When you do begin to move, take your time and stay in control.  Let the power of the kick do the work.  If you are unable to bring your chest, abdomen and stomach down parallel to the floor, allow yourself to fall gently forward out of the posture.  Don't worry; your extended arm will stop your from hitting the floor if you momentarily lose control.

Only the Standing Bow moves all the blood from one side of the body to the other, then back again.  It uses the compression and extension, and then the release, that I described earlier-the Hoover Dam effect- systematically bringing fresh blood and oxygen to all the organs and glands.  It develops balance, increases the size and elasticity of the ribcage, firms the abdominal wall and upper thighs, tightens uppers arms, hip and buttocks and improves the flexibility and strength of the lower spine.  Mentally, Standing Bow builds patience, determination and concentration.
