Juliette
I am a runner. Running is my first love and my passion for the sport makes me do not-so-intelligent things like run marathons. Honestly, if you ask me why on earth I think running 26.2 miles is a good idea I couldn't tell you. Even when I'm half way through a marathon I make a mental note to never participate in this grueling event ever again. Then I cross the finish line and want to immediately sign up for another one, which is exactly what I do the minute I get home.
However, my running addiction comes with a price. Since I am training year round for races, my body takes quite a pounding which often results in injuries ranging from calf strains to stress fractures in both shins to upper respiratory tract infections. Injuries are inevitable but it is frustrating and aggravating when they rudely interrupt my training cycle. So when a co-worker suggested that I try Bikram Yoga to help offset the damages from running, I didn't think twice and gave it a shot. Never mind that I am not at all flexible and that I have never been to a single yoga class in my entire life. I figured if I am able to survive a marathon, I can survive a couple 'stretches' here and there in a hot room. Easy!
As you already figured, my arrogance was served a hearty slice of humble pie.  My first class consisted of me making peace with my Maker and begging for Him to take me out of my misery. To put it simply, I wanted to die! I was encouraged by the Instructor to give it my best and despite the fact that I was not on the same level as the other human pretzels in the room, I was quite surprised at some of the postures I was able to execute. At the end of class, I checked my pulse just to make sure I still had one and to my surprise, I did! Much like my running, halfway through class I wanted out of this hot yoga madness, but in my final savanna I was already making a mental note to grab a class schedule.
And so, the bond between running and yoga was established.  Both activities, although completely different in mechanics, require patience, discipline, concentration, dedication, perseverance and endurance. Bikram yoga was all I could tell my running buddies about because I cannot stress enough how much yoga improved not only my running, but my overall view on life. Physically I suffer fewer injuries and my breathing during runs has improved tremendously. My heart rate stabilizes much faster after a hard effort and my body recovers in less than half the time it used to. Mentally I am better able to tune out any outside distractions and focus on the task at hand - be it at home, work, on the run or in yoga class.  Not to mention the shedding of toxic layers like doubt, uncertainty, stress, anger, frustration - whatever the rigors of your everyday life might be. Whenever I am having a bad running day, I think about how I got through 90 minutes of Bikram. Whenever I am having a bad yoga day, I think about how I got through 26.2 miles.
Because running is priority, I do not get to practice Bikram as often as I'd like to. But best believe, when I'm away for too long my body starts telling me and I know loud and clear that a visit is in order. Again, I can't tell you why I derive pleasure out of these two extreme activities. Maybe it has something to do with testing human limits. If you had told me years ago that I'd be running marathons and doing yoga - let alone in sweltering heat - I would have laughed, called you crazy and continued eating my Big Mac. Now that I know nothing is impossible, I feel confident that I can improve and grow with my running and yoga practice, which, with patience and consistency I will one day take to the next level. Triathlons and 100-miler ultra-marathons in the horizon? Why not! Kicking out in standing head to knee pose or executing the perfect toe stand in the near future? Why not! As long as there is a will there is a way, and that's the attitude that yoga reminds me to manifests in my everyday life.
