Florence
Three years ago, my sister asked me to go to a Bikram yoga studio in New York with her two weeks before her vacation to Aruba so she could look fit in her swimsuit. She did her two weeks, lost a few pounds, and I continued once a week for another half year, thinking it was something to do while my boyfriend (now husband) played basketball. It wasn't until I found Bikram Yoga Palisades that yoga became a major part of my life.

I was never an active person and was probably the weakest person I knew. I used to get sick every month in the winter, and every time it would last for at least two weeks. After graduating college, I wanted to live a healthier life. I tried doing different sports, going to the gym, but nothing really lasted. I have noticeable improvements physically after doing Bikram yoga. I rarely get sick, and even if I do it goes away a lot quicker. My seasonal allergy symptoms lessen to a point where I don't have to rely on decongestants. I can carry a 70 lbs suitcase up and down the stairs although I don't have bulging biceps. I gained meaningful muscle mass even though my weight only increased by a few lbs. It also helps me maintain a healthier lifestyle, because you certainly can't survive the 90-mintue class after a night of drinking, not eating or excessive eating, or without a good night sleep!

Bikram yoga practice didn't only help my physically, but also psychologically. Whenever I encounter a problem at work or at home, I would go spend 90 minutes in the studio. It is my safe haven where I can find my peace and quiet within my hectic life. Afterwards I would feel like I can deal with anything that comes my way.

Bikram yoga is a constant challenge, because every time you go into the studio, you want to do more and better. I am constantly battling with problems in my body. I have a mild case of scoliosis, an old injury in my right ankle, a new injury of an over-stretched hamstring, and not to mention pains I get from all the backward bends. Don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining. All these things are telling me that I have to be more focused during my practice so that I can improve my body, mindfully. Every time a bone cracks in my body, it feels great. You know you like that too =P.

I just had the opportunity to participate in the NYC Regional Yoga Championship last month with Kseniya. Many of our yoga family members came to cheer us on - thank you for all of your support, if I haven't said so already. It was such a wonderful experience. A lot of people asked me, "isn't it against the principal of yoga to have a competition?" No it is not. To me, I was not competing with other people; I was competing with myself. It is a way for me to perfect my practice while learning from other competitors. Seeing other people's practice and dedication to yoga showed me that yoga could be my lifelong adventure. Yes, it is.

Bikram yoga has changed my life so much that I cannot stop advertising it to my friends. I have to refrain myself from talking about it every time we have a get together. However, I am very proud to say that I have converted two yogis so far. Hopefully I will convert another one in the near future - my husband just had ACL surgery and I would love for him to include Bikram yoga as part of his rehabilitation routine. We'll see how it goes =).
