Testimonial from a BYP family member
Stephen Stancato
Like many great things in life, Bikram Yoga just showed up spontaneously and unplanned for.
I remember feeling sick with a cold when a friend suggested I try it in NYC. While I didn't have any expectations, I was open to the experience; but what came next was a huge surprise: I thought I was going to die in my first class. I absolutely hated it, and thought that anyone who stays in a hot room for that long must be crazy!
Since I had a free week at that location, I somehow went back. By day 3, my bad cold felt like a distant memory, and suddenly, I was able to get past the heat and into the practice. As someone who hardly exercises, I couldn't believe I found something that kept my interest for more than 1 day - but there was a little dilemma: the commute to the city while paying for parking would add up.

 | I reasoned that continuing Bikram Yoga could wait once I moved back to Manhattan. But suddenly, my intuition told me to see if maybe there was a local Bikram studio in NJ. Well, thank God, there was - it was Bikram Yoga Palisades - and I couldn't believe how much cleaner, aesthetically pleasing, and sharper their instructors were compared to the super-packed, trendy (and smelly) NYC location I was going to. Not only is this the only Bikram Yoga studio in Bergen County (lucky for us NJ residents!), it happens to be close to where I live - so for me, it was a worthwhile discovery!
The first thing I noticed was that the teachers, especially Owner Eune, at the location was engaging, focused, present and really observant of their students - it was really inspiring! It motivated me to try harder and feel like this hard work was worth it because a) remarkable guidance and instruction was still available despite it being a group exercise. b) there was an uplifting sense of accomplishment and reward for sticking through a difficult, challenging 90 minutes of sweat.
Bikram Yoga is also referred to as a "90-minute moving meditation" and while it's not meditation in the traditional "ohm" sense, I find I have definitely been able to connect with and access my strongest self more often both in and out of the hot room since a lot of stillness, focus and breathing are required to move through the 26 postures.
It is the same routine, but each class really is different, which creates space for on-going interest, advancement and challenge no matter how long you practice.
Through Bikram Yoga, I've been able to: - Learn about commitment, discipline, and the reality of hard work before results - Stay more centered, calm and focused in general - Put myself and my health first - Experience being sick less and for shorter periods of time (good-bye to formerly frequent colds, allergies and flu!) - Improve and maintain various levels of Spiritual, Emotional and Physical well-being - Regulate weight and develop a more flexible body - And most importantly, implement some form of consistent exercise in my life for more than a year!
If you are ready to reward yourself, make a change, and want to try a practice unlike anything you can find at the gym, stop by and see for yourself if this is a good fit. For first timers, this is an exercise that you definitely should try for about a week before deciding if it's a good match for your needs and fitness goals.
I am so pleased with the community-like vibe of this location (the regulars are simply hooked), that I would consider continuing at this NJ location even if I relocate to Manhattan this year. This practice has definitely been a vital ingredient in my path towards evolving, improvement and awareness and hope to keep it in my life for years to come. Thanks so much for to the staff of Bikram Yoga Palisades for providing a great service and keeping it fun, even when it's hard! |
