Locking the Knee
One of the most misunderstood principles in Bikram Yoga is "Locking the Knee". It's also an apt metaphor for living the life of a yogi, with determination and balance. It sounds so simple, but to continuously contract the thigh muscles, lock your standing knee and balance evenly on a solid, unwavering leg for even 10 seconds is nearly impossible for most beginning students. But unless you can do this, you can't really do Bikram Yoga. Here's why: If the thigh muscles remain slack, you will create unnecessary compression in the knee joint, eventually causing damage. When you engage the quadriceps femoris muscles, the tendons and ligaments of the knee become active and pull bone away from bone, strengthening and rehabilitating the joint. This is a strong example of why concentration is so important to practicing Hatha Yoga and successfully healing the body.
What's more, if you cannot lock the knee, you won't ever find Self-Realization. Struggle instills discipline, so we can begin to control our minds. Suffering breeds compassion. It sounds simplistic, but until you've actually stood on your own leg with your knee safely and powerfully locked like a solid piece of concrete, truly believing that you don't even have a knee, you won't be able to find inner peace, love and happiness. That is why I have to scream at my students to push them toward this goal. I tell my students, "When you die, I will jump up and down on your grave, shouting, 'Lock the damn knee!' "

Testimonial from a BYP family member
How has Bikram Yoga Changed Your Life?
Kim Geneux
Sometimes, life throws a wrench in your best laid plans. More importantly, sometimes things that happen prior to the wrench which unexpectedly prepare you, in some way, shape or form, for whatever life throws at you. Bikram Yoga prepared me for my "wrench".
I have been lucky in the sense where I was always thin without even trying.
I ate whatever I wanted and was fortunate enough that I did not even have to worry out working out. When I turned 40, that all changed. I slowly started packing on the pounds. It was a slow kind weight gain and I never really thought it was all that bad, although I had gained approximately fifty pounds. I come from a family where heart disease took the lives of my both my parents and maternal grandparents so in March of 2009, I decided it was time to do something about it before it ballooned out of control. I began a sensible diet and daily bicycling regiment and managed to lose 45 pounds by October of the same year.
I believe the cycling really helped with the weight loss and actually enjoyed being outdoors and exercising. However, the seasons were changing and I knew it would be too cold for me to continue cycling. It was then, that a friend of mine, Maya Lordo, suggested we give Bikram Yoga a try. At first, I thought she was crazy but I knew I had to try something so we gave it a whirl. We printed off the registration form from the computer, read the guidelines, etc., and showed up for the class. I must tell you, from the second I stepped into the studio, I was ready to run out of there screaming, it was so hot. I quickly pulled myself together and looked around the room. There were people of every sex, race, age and body shape in there and I thought if they could all do it, so could I. I completed the class, and only looked at the clock, which was strategically placed BEHIND me, about 100 times. When I walked out of the studio my legs were weak and I thought I was going to die, but felt like a champ because I actually stuck it out. I went home showered and slipped into bed. My boyfriend asked me if I would go back and I surprised myself with the answer of "absolutely." I can honestly say I have been addicted ever since. I tried to attend class at least three days a week and with that I quickly lost those "last five pounds" and had seen definition in my arms, legs and stomach and I received so many compliments on how my skin glowed.
NOW, here comes the wrench. I had gone for a routine mammogram in February and was horrified when I received a phone call that the mammogram was "questionable" and I needed to have further testing. Needless to say, this further testing included biopsies, and multiple MRI's. I must tell you that through all of these tests I imagined myself doing the Pranayama Breathing exercise of Bikram Yoga in my mind and it really got me through what could have been extremely uncomfortable, not to mention claustrophobic experiences. I could almost hear Eune's voice saying "hold it" and I was so thankful for that. As it turns out, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and required surgery. I managed to get through the surgery and the recovery wasn't too terrible. The worst part however was not being able to go to Bikram Yoga for the two week recovery. Little did I know the worst was yet to come?
After the surgery, I required a six week regiment of radiation therapy and was advised that I could not subject the skin to extreme hot or cold temperatures and was informed that sweating on the skin exposed to the radiation was absolutely out of the question. I was horrified and disappointed. I need Bikram Yoga for my body, spirit and more importantly, my mind. It always kept me so centered and ready for anything. Needless to say, I have only two more weeks left and my anticipated return date is Wednesday, August 11th.
I must say that Bikram Yoga has become such a big part of my life and I honestly am so thankful that I have become part of the Bikram Yoga family. It has helped me in all aspects of my life, during all phases of my life and I firmly believe that through its theories and concepts, it has aided me in getting through this difficult time. I can't even tell you how many times the doctors and medical staff have complimented me on how calm I have managed to remain during all phases of my "WRENCH" and I completely attribute that calmness to Bikram and the teachers at Bikram Yoga Palisades. I truly cannot wait to return. Thank you so much! |
