Set Up
Fixed Firm is one of the hardest posture for most of us, who seldom sit down on the floor.  Please be patient!
It doesn't matter how far you can go into the posture. You can stay in Set Up(trying to touch your hips on the floor) or Entry(trying to bring your shoulders down to the floor).
When you stay in Set Up trying to bring your hips down to the floor and if your ankles are hurting, open your knees and put your fingertips on the floor to support your body weight.  If you can not do Entry or too much pain doing the posture, sperate the knees before lowering your elbows. When you are able to go into the full expresion of the posture, focus on keeping your knees touching and flat on the floor. 
Remember you will get 100% benefit from each posture as long as you are trying your best!

How has Bikram Yoga Changed Your Life?

Prior to 2007, my life was on the upswing.  I was living in Atlanta and I had a very successful career as a policy analyst for the federal government, my career as an actor was really starting to take off, and my social life was thriving.  However, all of that changed when my husband found a job - in New York.  To add to that, two weeks after he found out about the job, I found out I was pregnant.  I ultimately left my job, friends, and family and moved to New Jersey where I knew no one but my husband and the baby in my belly.  Over the course of that year my entire life would change.  Everything that was familiar to me was gone - my career, my friendships, my family, even my body.  I felt like I used to be this vibrant, colorful person and all that was ebbing away, leaving behind this dull gray shell for me to live in.  I felt like I was a really good mother and a wife but I had become a pitiful me.

 

And then, the scenery changed.  My husband and I moved from Jersey City to Bogota.  I had a thought; I used to do Bikram Yoga in Atlanta years ago.  Maybe there was a studio in the vicinity of my new home.  As luck (or fate, or God) would have it, there was.  I found Bikram Yoga Palisades in the winter of 2009 and I bought the one month introductory package.  In the class I found something familiar, at last.  There was the physical challenge that I had been missing, but my new yoga home revealed a more nuanced benefit; practice, in the most literal sense.  Before I wanted to move through each pose quickly and rush towards the end when they would open the door and I could feel the cool air.  At Palisades though, I learned to look forward to the difficult poses, to the opportunity to try to get it right.  And then the epiphany; in Bikram Yoga, just like life, everyday we get a chance to push towards perfect.  Some days we get close and some days we stay far, but no matter how poorly we do the first time, there is always a second set, literally 30 seconds away.  That is the lesson that has changed my life.  Thank God for the second set!

 

So that is my story.  I have gotten more adjusted to my home here.  I have made friends, and with the wonderful support and help of the studio I have even grabbed the title of Mrs. New Jersey America 2010 (along with Best in Swimsuit thanks to Eune and Sean).  I now have regularly scheduled "me" time, which is premium stuff to mothers!  I am stronger now and I have seen my body change for the better.  I have seen my mind set at peace and I have watched my endurance grow.  I have even introduced my toddler to yoga at the studio, and she loves it.  Bikram yoga is not an exercise regimen or a quick weight loss trick; it truly is a meditation, a way of life.  I am so thankful to Bikram Yoga Palisades for providing the space and time for me to discover something all my own - my practice.
